Take a look at some of the photographs in Richard Avedon's series "The American West" shot in the late 1970's-early 1980's using an 8'x10' camera. (Similar to our 4"x5" cameras but with negatives 4 times as big!)

Leave a brief answer for each of these questions:
1) How did Avedon end up pursuing this project?
2) What did he do to prepare for the project? How did he find his subjects?
3) How did the use of a large format camera effect Avedon's interaction with his subjects?
4) What kind of set up/lighting was used?

DISCUSSION TOPIC #1:
During the Large Format Class in Spring 2012 I started a list of photographers who have used large format for at least one of their projects. I'd like to keep adding to this is and also make the names clickable.
Take a look Page titled Large Format Photographers List.
- Choose 5 photographers from the list and in the comments section leave a link to their work so that I can activate their name. (if they already have a link and it is a good one, just put their name)
- If you know of a photographer who is using large format but is not on the list, please add their name and a link in the comment section
- Pick ONE photographer that interests you and prepare a short 5 minute oral presentation for the next class focusing on why using a Large Format camera was important for the success of the images. Choose 5-10 images to show of their work (it can be from one specific project or span many though its probably easier to focus on one project). Bring the images on a thumb drive and have a hard copy of your presentation to turn in to me.
- BONUS CREDIT if you also are able to bring a book about that photographer or with some of the photographer's work included in it.
